Challenge:

Flinders University Academy, the pathway provider of Flinders University, wanted to create a video series of engaging student stories showcasing the experiences of its international students. The objective of these videos was to show that the Academy provided international students a pathway to reach their higher education goals, and that real students have done it before them.

Project Outline:

Our brief was to come to Flinders University Academy and capture the unique stories of 3 international students who had gone through the Academy and ended up studying at Flinders University. We were to deliver 3x 2-minute videos as well as 30-second cutdowns for social media.

Strategy:

Every student has their own unique story. But a useful video story has to be engaging, useful, inspiring and relevant to a prospective student. Here is how we did it:

Initial Consultation:

Engaging with Flinders, we identified their key content themes that aligned with their goals.We agreed on key priorities, discussed what kind of talent would help us achieve the desired outcome, confirmed the project timeline, and gathered student contacts for interviews, alongside any supplementary information necessary. We also checked assumptions on crew and gear set up and more.

Content Refinement:

This is a crucial step. Here we develop the shot list, shooting schedule, do student pre-interviews, treatments and the script. With international students, you want to capture authenticity as well as the key points for your marketing and communication plan. So, for example, we would create 2 scripts. One would be in line with what the client wants and one would be a very authentic representation of what the student told our crew during the pre-interview stage. This dramatically improves the quality of the video.

Content Creation:

We arrived on the day with run sheets, enthusiasm and all necessary equipment to efficiently cover the complete list of deliverables. Our project team double checked everyone was ready with our schedule, permissions had been granted and the client was kept in the loop. Our team interacted professionally with the students and staff.

The team employed a range of videography techniques and strategies to maximise the time on shoot and how to get best out of the various environments and talent. This required treatment checks with the client as we went, including framing, a patient and understanding direction of the talent, use of natural light, camera movement and more.

This shoot went better than we could have imagined, in part because we had the client with us the whole day, providing oversight on what to include, what to avoid, key phrases, key shots and more. It’s so much easier doing it at this stage rather than in post production.

Post-Production:

The post-production process was fast, with a rough edit within 7 days. We transformed raw footage into polished videos through colour correction, sound design, and motion graphics. Subtitles enhanced accessibility, catering to a global audience. Quality control ensured high standards, and the final videos were delivered to the client in various formats.

Outcome:

The final videos exceeded the expectations of the client. The videos were also well-received by prospective students and their families, and they played a significant role in increasing applications to Flinders Academy. The client expressed their gratitude for the team's dedication and professionalism throughout the project.

Furthermore, the videos served as a valuable marketing tool for Flinders Academy for use on recruitment trips and fairs, showcasing the institution's commitment to international students.
